    • Angelina Café and Espresso bar

      by Alex Massaad

I work in the heart of the ByWard Market and we're severely lacking in terms of places to grab a healthy bite to eat. For example, lets say you're at Majors Hill Park and you want a coffee or a sandwich. You have the option of walking to Bridgehead on Dalhouse (600m, 7 minutes walking according to google maps), walking to one of Rideau and Sussex' two Starbucks (also 600m, but apparently 8 minutes walk).

Very disapointing, until now! A third option to grab a snack in the heart of Ottawa: Angelina Cafe

Located at 11 Murray Street, Ottawa Ontario (old location of Glitz Cupcakes) this small cafe serves up a great selection.

I dare even say their sandwiches taste better than La...

    • New Design Coming Soon

We are separating this blog from http://www.ottawafoodreviews.ca so that we can use that blog for documenting our kitchen experiences (which are quickly eclipsing our restaurant experiences these days in both quality and frequency ;-)

As part of that separation I think I'm going to take the time to say goodbye to this terrible wordpress theme, which pretty much has not worked since I installed it, but it looks nice.

      More details to follow

Check out this post below for a bunch of surprisingly intricate sandwich designs. Not really inspiring for lunches, but its certainly nice to look at.

    • Autumn Food and Drink Favourites! (Pumpkin is a Winner in Ottawa)

      By: Victoria Garland

This article comes better late than never! (or December...wink, wink)

I think the one thing synonymous with Fall is pumpkin. Correction, Pumpkin pie. I'm a big fan of a good spicy pumpkin pie. Lots of pumpkin pie spice containing cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, etc. There is something just so undoubtably "Autumn" about it all that I thought it was only fitting to do an article on my delicious favourites around the city of Ottawa that especially pique my interests this time of year.

First and foremost, the Pumpkin Spice Latte. (Starbucks does it best, but I would definitely be open to trying any other forms of the favourite should they be recommended to me!) A little whipped cream and sprinkled with pumpkin pie spice is just lovely (especially served extra hot on a chilly day)....

    • A lunch at the Tea Party in Ottawa

      By: Victoria Garland

I’ve been really excited to write this review ever since Alex and I went to lunch about two weeks ago at The Tea Party!

I heard great things about it but since I had only stopped in once about two years ago (to pick up some Arctic Fire loose leaf tea) I was itching to go back and experience their vegetarian lunch menu.

The Tea Party is located on York Street, right across from Market Organics. It is housed in a very welcoming, old Victorian-style house with seating that includes a black leather couch, little tables and a large raised table.

Along the walls are large mason jars filled with loose leaf tea that you can open up and smell to help make your selection. Other items include tea paraphernalia such as teapots, cups, diffusers, bagged teas and a selection of preserves (I have my eyes on...

    • Cupcakes! Reviews of The Cupcake Lounge and Glitz Cupcakes and Company

      By: Victoria Garland

A Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake from Glitz cupcakes in Ottawa

These sweet little cakes have finally made it to our side of the city. Having heard of many cupcakeries located in Ottawa, especially in the Glebe along Bank Street, I was delighted to notice two that have recently opened around the corner from where we live in the Byward Market!

We first noticed The Cupcake Lounge while it was under construction. It’s located next to the Blue Cactus at 6 Byward Market Square, between York Street and Clarence. We ended up walking by during their early grand opening and Alex and I were lucky to be able to purchase and preview their delicacies. They only had a limited menu, and the majority were all sold out! Alex left with a Chocolate Chocolate and I with a Vanilla Vanilla.

    • Lunch - Harry's Deli

      by: Victoria Garland

      Harry’s Deli

As I sit at my desk writing this, I can recall many times being plagued with the eternal question everyone in the business district/downtown core asks themselves around noon, “What am I going to eat for lunch?”

Aside from the days I actually do bring a lunch to work, working in downtown Ottawa for over three years has definitely compelled me scour to the ends of the internet for a new, delicious choice in lunch dining. (There are only so many times you can eat at McDonalds, along with the tried and true backups located conveniently close to your work; and those can start to get old, fast.)

While India Palace (one of those aforementioned conveniently close to my place of work eateries) is delicious and I shall have to write a review shortly about their fantastic, extensive lunch buffet is that sometimes it can...

    • Smoke’s Poutinerie

      By Alex Massaad

      Smoke's Poutinerie
407 Dalhousie Street (next to the awesome Caribbean food place)
      (613) 789-2873

I have an unusual entry considering some of my other reviews. I often have to eat dinner out while I'm at work and Smokes Poutinerie is very close to my work. They are also open late so sometimes I end up going after work too.
      Curry Chicken Poutine

They have a large variety of toppings and this time I decided to try their Curry Chicken Poutine. This is fries and cheese curds with slow roasted chicken breast with spicy curry sauce. Their large is 8.99 but I felt that it was more than enough and didn't even finish all of it.

It's not the greatest "food" but they do have the best poutine around, I would go back,...

    • Champa Thai

      193 King Edward
      K1N 7L6 Ottawa

I ordered the Vegetarian Spring Rolls (5 Rolls) for 7.25
      Pad Eggplant (Shrimp) for 11.95

With tax and delivery and tip it was about $25.00.

I'm often at work during my dinner time and I have any options for food at my workplace besides take out. My frequent vice has usually been Pizza Pizza pizza since they have a fast easy online ordering system, have good delivery times and can make a pizza (and other food) that I can eat. Unfortunately sometimes I seek out more variety.

A photo of Shrimp Pad Eggplant and Vegetarian Spring Rolls sitting in take out containers. They ar from Champa Thai Ottawa

Recently I have ordered a couple times from Champa Thai here in Ottawa. Their...

    • Blue Cactus

      2 Byward Market Square
      Ottawa, ON K1N 7A1
      (613) 241-7061

      1 Pecan Salad $15.00
      1 Chicken Fajita $23.00
      2x 20 oz Beer $13.00

      Total for two $57.00 (aprox)

We recently went out to the Blue Cactus to grab some food at night. I decided to go with a big salad but Victoria was quite hungry so she went for a Fajita.

My salad was fine but Victoria's fajita came cold and was practically frozen by the end of the meal. She didn't finish it but we did take it home.

I ate it the following day despite it being pretty terrible. All I really got was an overpriced salad and a beer that I could get anywhere.

The last time we were at this place a piece of glass was dropped on the second floor and landed in our food. I have nothing good to say.

    • The Black Tomato

      Reviewed by Alex Massaad

Here comes a review from one of our favourite Ottawa restaurants. We've been several times already and every experience has been as great as this, so its about time I write a review! Located right behind Chapters and just minutes from the Rideau Centre I'm always surprised at how local this place is to me. Victoria and myself have been a few times for dinner already but this review covers their lunch options.

We started off our late lunch with the cheese plate. It comes with a creamy chevre, a sharp blue (Bleu de Sophie) and a Tomme de Gaston goats milk cheese made in Oxford Mills. You can read about this last cheese here where the Globe and Mail profiles this small run cheese farm. The best part about the serving is without...

    • Miss Mixologie – N°1

      Written By: Victoria Garland

While Alex and I are busy enjoying the summer heatwave, soaking up the sun rays on the patios of Ottawa's finest delicatessens and epicurean eateries (with new reviews in the works!), I thought I'd keep everyone's mouths watering by adding some of my best drink recipes!

A self-proclaimed bartender extraordinaire (Miss Mixologie), I have quite the repertoire amongst friends and guests alike. While busy working on our most recent reviews, I would love to share some of my most favoured drink concoctions.

      N°1

      York Street Sling
(A different take on the Singapore Sling)

      1oz of Vodka
0.75oz - 1oz of Cherry Brandy (to taste)
Fill glass with ice and orange juice
Add 2 sweet wild cherries to the drink (try not to substitute for maraschino!)

A surprisingly simple drink recipe, but extremely delicious and refreshing.

Now to start working on those restaurant...
